Moving is an exciting yet anxious time because there's just so much to do in advance. Most people begin sorting through their possessions two weeks before moving day. While this seems like a sufficient amount of time, it isn't. Some even procrastinate and wait until there's only a week left. While we all know it's a real pain, but being prepared will pay huge dividends in less stress and provide a smoother transition.Moving Time

Checklist of Things to Do before You Move

The biggest problems people have with moving is not about remembering to box-up this or that, it's what they don't remember which causes the most grief. All of a sudden, you're faced with something you didn't anticipate and must act quickly. This can lead to acting rashly and making a poor decision to get it out-of-the-way.

You know when you're getting ready to move, and you think, "This is nothing. I can get it done in two weekends."? Well, you should really stop thinking that way because one thing's for sure: Moving pretty much always takes longer than you think it's going to take. So, be smart and plan ahead. There's lots of packing and organizing you can get out-of-the-way two months in advance of your move. --How Stuff Works.com

To make your move less stressful and laborious, you've got to plan well in-advance of moving day. Take a step back and take time to consider everything you'll need to address. Remember, it's what you're most likely to forget that's going to bite you when you're rushing to get the move done. Here's a helpful checklist of things to do before you move to make it a smoother transition:

  • Cancel all recurring monthly charges. At least a month to three weeks before you move, cancel all of your recurring monthly charges. These include your gym membership, cable, internet, medications, and so on. You can schedule these to be cancelled or transferred in-advance.
  • Eat leftovers and frozen foods. Three weeks before you move, begin to eat all leftovers and frozen foods. Shop for groceries sparsely until after the move is over. You don't want to throw away good food.
  • Notify your insurance companies. Your auto, dental, health, and homeowner or renter's insurance companies should be notified of your new address. This is also a good time to go-over your policy to look for discounts and savings.
  • Turn-in a change of address with the post office. Submit a change of address form with the U.S. Postal Service two weeks before you move. You can do this online or drop a form in the mail.
  • Keep your bills in-order. All your current and new monthly bills will be very important to remember. Create a list including things you'll "take with you," such as your cell phone, car payment, et cetera. Also, schedule utilities to be turned on at your new address.
  • Take pictures of your valuables. At least a few days before you move, take a few moments to snap pictures of your valuables, electronics, and the like. Be sure to capture how electronics are arranged so you have a visual guide to follow.
  • Pack a to-go transition box. Put a first aid kit, some plastic cutlery, paper towels, paper plates, toilet paper, toiletries, batteries, and cleaning supplies in a to-go transition box.
